WAYDE van Niekerk is back on the athletics track after a lengthy lay-off due to a knee injury he picked up at a game of tag rugby in 2017.

The 400m World and Olympic champion was running at the Free State Championships in Bloemfontein on Saturday and didn’t put much effort into the first 320m of the race. However, he showed glimpses of what he’s capable of by putting in the hard yards at the back-end of the race which he won in a time of 47.47. The slow time will be the least of Van Niekerk worries as he continues his rehabilitation and preparation for the 2019 season.

According to Van Niekerk’s manager, Peet van Zyl, the purpose of the race was purely for 26-year-old to test his knee. “We’re very happy to see Wayde out on the track and competing again. Tannie Ans (Van Niekerk’s coach) wanted to see how strong he is and we’re very happy with his progress. The time was of no concern for us,” Van Zyl said.
